AI is coming

04/07/2021 | | cambio, clase creativa, nuevas tecnologías, otra economía | 1 Comentario

Two years ago, I felt the need to update my own understanding regarding digital technology and the IT industry. I keep offering my 25-years point of view to businesspeople in a masterclass and it was maybe lacking some key points regarding “AI” (by “AI” I mean Artificial Intelligence).

I guess this sense of vacuum was watered by the reading of Yuval Noah Harari’s trilogy and his obsessive signaling of AI as the number one threat that we humanity face. At that time, the seeds of curiosity where already planted by two important movies that I enjoyed in 2014: Her and Transcendence.

Of course, my curiosity is not an easy one. I started in the digital industry in 1993 and I do not have much time neither patience for vaporware neither technology flashes, that orchestra of people overselling technology and its thousand naïve, isolated pitches. This maybe because I fully recognize that Amara’s Law is one of the particularly important rules of the industry: “We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run”. Last times that I made some similar efforts were with the arrival of smartphones and social networks in 2008, which I fully understood as a big inflection point; and with the irruption of sales pitches around blockchain and bitcoin in 2016, which I felt annoying and confusing.

So, this 2019, somehow, two opposite industry forces got my attention. On one hand, YouTube released a series of documentaries by the name of The Age of AI which fully opened my eyes and helped separating the wheat from the chaff. On the other hand, I found about Tristan Harris and his Center for Humane Technology, which I felt as nicely embodying my own journey and my own worries. One year later, the documentary The Social Dilemma was released. Both happenings feed up my curiosity and kicked off my will to better understand the state of the art of the industry as a whole and that of AI in specific. By the way, I strongly recommended these documentaries to you.

Following my rule of three, I chose three books. Finally, they resulted in three plus one. I felt to start by reading again a novel that would help to reframe the situation with some sweetness and magic. So, these were my choices. In total, four books, more than 1.500 pages with hundreds of margin notes and underlines, and lots of side reading and watching to deepen in those concepts, people and companies that were flowing in front of me: (más…)

Jordan B. Peterson’s «Maps of Meaning»: what we should be grateful for

21/06/2021 | | cambio, educación, emprender | No hay comentarios

I got to know about Jordan B. Peterson while reading the The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Buzoff. She referred him in the context of the The Big Five Model and I was really in deep curiosity about this. In fact, I have been searching for a good way to learn it for years.

The Big Five Model, also known as the OCEAN model, is the most well known crossroads between technology and psychology. First time I knew about this model was when the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2017. Then, it came back to me while reading and researching Yuval Noah Harari‘s books during 2018 and 2019. Again, it appeared again with the The Social Dilemma documentary and in Shoshana Buzoff’s book in 2020. Finnally, i found it indirectly again in the book AI Superpowers by Kai-Fu Lee associated to what he refers as «the first wave of AI: internet AI».

This model is what big technology companies like facebook, google and others use to organize and classify users. In other words, this model describes the «psychologicy profiles» that they «big tech companies» use to understand better who we are and what is it that motivates us in order to define who to serve and with which services . Please, note that «we» means  «you and me and all people that we know» up to 2,7 billion users (this is the latest «number of active users in facebook» as declared by the company). Of course, I fully know that this paragraph could be a bible itself if we focus on the words «who to serve and with which services», which happens to be the theme of Shoshana Buzoff’s book.

He cambiado mucho.

Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens, Homo Deus and 21 Lesson: what we should be grateful for

24/04/2019 | | cambio, nuevas tecnologías | 3 Comentario

It was by full randomness that Homo Deus, the second book of Yuval Noah Harari, reached me. It was October 2017 and I was flying San Francisco to start with my teacher certification process at SIYLI. You already know how it is: an easy walk through the corridors of the airport’s library, looking left and right until the book-to-read is chosen.  During the flight, I read around 100 pages and decided to put it down. I received it as a fastastic vision of the future with no special, practical insight.

However, it got back to me a couple of months ago (some magical situation behind which does not add to this post). But now, as soon as I reached further what I have already read, it simply skyrocketed me. So I have dedicated all my spare time during the last two months to read, watch, and study Harari’s views and work.

At this moment, I feel fortunate that he has written what he has written, so let me offer my gratitude in plain words. Thank you very much, Mr. Harari, for such a systemic thesis of what we humans are, where we humans do come from, and where we humans maybe will end up!

Let me share what I like the most about his work by offering a quick reflection, bullet-point type. (más…)

Digital Transformation and Search Inside Yourself: is there a connection?

11/04/2019 | | cambio, nuevas tecnologías, SIY | 1 Comentario

Much has been written about Digital Transformation and its 360º impact on business. After more than 25 years in the IT industry, I can simply reinforce what a deep impact it has and how important it is for any business (and any business person) willing to make a living (keep market presence and earnings) in the next 10 years. The process itself is an easy process although is plenty of missunderstandings and blind spots. Nevertheless, if i could summarized it in four steps, they would be as follows: (más…)
